Prof. Dr. Makarim Wibisono’s career spans over 40 years in the United Nations, ASEAN, Indonesian Government, and in the realm of academia. Currently, he is a senior advisor to PT AJA Sertifikasi Indonesia, particularly in the area of business and human rights.

As a diplomat, Dr. Wibisono was the former Indonesian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York and Geneva, plus also served as Ambassador of Indonesia to certain Central American countries. He was also Director-General for Foreign Affairs Economic Relations (2000-2002), and Director for Multilateral Economic Cooperation (1993-1994) of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As Director-General for Asia Pacific and Africa (2002-2004), he negotiated and helped finalize the Bali Concord II, which effectively created the ASEAN Community. He led the Indonesian Delegation to the Senior Officials Meetings of ASEAN, ASEAN+3, ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and APEC.

From January 2011 to 2014 he served as the Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation. Following his retirement from this post in May 2014, Dr. Wibisono was appointed by the United Nations Human Rights Council to serve as special investigator into Israeli actions in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. He is expected to serve in this role for a six-year period.
